La Palma is one of the quieter Canary Islands, best suited to travellers who want dramatic scenery, walking routes and a slower pace rather than large-scale resort life. Known as “La Isla Bonita”, it has steep green ravines, pine forests, volcanic ridges and black-sand beaches, all within a relatively compact island.
Santa Cruz de La Palma, the island capital, is a good base if you like historic streets, harbour views and places to eat within walking distance. Its old town has colourful balconies, small squares and traditional Canarian architecture. On the east coast, Los Cancajos is one of the most established holiday areas, with a sheltered volcanic beach, hotels and restaurants close to the airport. On the sunnier west side, Tazacorte and Puerto de Tazacorte are popular for sea views, sunsets, fish restaurants and a relaxed waterfront feel. Puerto Naos has also been a well-known resort area, although visitors should check current local advice on access following the 2021 volcanic eruption.
The island’s coastline is rugged, with dark volcanic sand rather than long golden beaches. Los Cancajos and Puerto de Tazacorte are among the easier beach choices, while wilder spots such as Playa de Nogales are more about scenery and photography than casual swimming, as sea conditions can be strong.
La Palma’s biggest appeal is outdoors. Caldera de Taburiente National Park offers some of the Canary Islands’ most impressive hiking, with viewpoints, forested trails and deep ravines. The high road to Roque de los Muchachos rewards visitors with huge views above the clouds and access to one of the world’s important astronomical observatory areas. The island is also famous for clear night skies, with organised stargazing experiences available in suitable conditions. Other highlights include the Los Tilos laurel forest, the volcanic landscapes around Cumbre Vieja, and viewpoints that show how varied the island is.
Food is relaxed and local, with plenty of Canarian staples such as papas arrugadas with mojo, grilled fish, goat’s cheese, local wines and simple seafood restaurants by the coast. La Palma is a strong choice for a holiday with nature, walking, viewpoints and authentic island towns at its centre.
