About Matagorda holidays

Matagorda is a relaxed coastal resort on Lanzarote’s south-east coast, just north of Puerto del Carmen and very close to the island’s airport. It suits holidaymakers who want sunshine, sea views and an easy-going base rather than a busy resort centre. The short transfer is a real advantage, although you may notice aircraft coming in and out during the day, especially around the seafront and airport-side areas.

The resort is centred around a long promenade, low-rise accommodation and a small choice of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Most places are casual and geared towards visitors, with menus typically covering Spanish dishes, seafood, breakfasts, snacks and familiar international options. Evenings in Matagorda tend to be quiet and sociable rather than lively, so it is a good fit if you prefer a meal, a drink and a stroll by the sea. For a wider choice of bars, restaurants and late-night venues, Puerto del Carmen is nearby and easy to reach by taxi, bus or a longer walk along the coast.

Matagorda’s beach is one of its main draws. Playa Matagorda has a broad stretch of sand and a spacious feel, with the promenade running directly behind it. The area can be breezy, as is common on Lanzarote, but that also helps keep temperatures comfortable. Neighbouring Playa de los Pocillos offers another long sandy beach within walking distance, giving plenty of room for sunbathing, paddling and relaxed beach days.

Walking and cycling are among the easiest things to do locally. The seafront route links Matagorda with Puerto del Carmen in one direction and Playa Honda towards Arrecife in the other, with sea views for much of the way. It is also a practical base for exploring Lanzarote by organised excursion or hire car, including volcanic landscapes at Timanfaya National Park, the island’s wine region around La Geria, and César Manrique-linked sights such as Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes.

Overall, Matagorda is best for a straightforward Lanzarote holiday with beach time, gentle evenings and convenient access to both Puerto del Carmen and the rest of the island.
