Cape Verde is an Atlantic island nation off the west coast of Africa, made up of ten main islands with a mix of beach resorts, volcanic landscapes, lively towns and quiet rural scenery. The culture blends African, Portuguese and Brazilian influences, reflected in the music, language and food. Cape Verdean Creole is widely spoken alongside Portuguese, and music styles such as morna and funaná are an important part of local identity. Food is hearty and often simple, with fresh fish, seafood, rice, beans and cachupa, a traditional slow-cooked stew, among the dishes visitors are likely to find.

Cape Verde suits travellers looking for dependable sunshine, uncrowded beaches, gentle exploring and a more relaxed island atmosphere than many larger holiday destinations. It is also a good option for combining a resort stay with a taste of local culture or, on the greener islands, walking and scenic touring.
