Cavtat is a relaxed seaside resort on Croatia’s Dubrovnik Riviera, set around a pretty harbour and two wooded peninsulas. It is a good choice for holidaymakers who want Adriatic scenery, swimming spots and easy access to Dubrovnik, but prefer a quieter base than the city itself. The atmosphere is laid-back and traditional, with stone houses, waterfront cafés, small boats in the bay and pine-shaded paths leading around the headlands.

Days in Cavtat often centre on the waterfront. The promenade is ideal for an easy stroll, with restaurants and bars looking out across the harbour. You will find plenty of places serving Croatian and Mediterranean dishes, including fresh fish, seafood, grilled meats, pasta and local wines. Dining is generally relaxed rather than formal, and many visitors choose Cavtat for long evening meals by the sea.

Beaches in Cavtat are mostly pebbly, rocky or paved bathing platforms rather than broad sandy bays, which is typical of this part of the Dalmatian coast. The sea is usually clear and inviting, with swimming areas around the harbour, along the peninsulas and near nearby hotels. Water shoes can be useful, especially on rocky sections. Boat trips, kayaking and snorkelling are popular ways to enjoy the coastline, while regular boat services and local buses make it straightforward to visit Dubrovnik for the day.

Cavtat also has a small but interesting historic centre. Highlights include the Church of St Nicholas, the Franciscan Monastery and the Racic Mausoleum, designed by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, which sits above the town with lovely views. The Bukovac House, former home of painter Vlaho Bukovac, is another worthwhile stop for visitors interested in art and local history.

Nightlife in Cavtat is low-key. Expect harbourfront drinks, wine bars and occasional live music rather than clubs and late-night partying. This makes it well suited to couples, mature travellers and anyone looking for a scenic, comfortable resort with culture, swimming and day-trip options close at hand.
