South of Split, Podstrana and Omiš offer easy beach access and a more relaxed base. Omiš is especially good for active days out, with the Cetina River providing opportunities for rafting, canyon scenery and boat trips. Further along the Makarska Riviera, resorts such as Baška Voda, Brela, Tučepi and Makarska are known for pebble beaches, pine-shaded waterfronts and the dramatic Biokovo mountain rising behind the coast.

The islands add another dimension to holidays in the Split region. Brač is popular for day trips and longer stays, particularly around Bol and the famous Zlatni Rat beach. Hvar is known for its historic harbour town, lavender fields and attractive coves, while ferries and catamarans make island-hopping a practical option in the warmer months.

Food is a major part of the experience. Menus typically feature grilled fish, seafood pasta, risotto, local olive oil, Dalmatian ham, cheeses and simple meat dishes cooked over charcoal. You will find everything from casual konobas to smart waterfront restaurants, with the best meals often focused on fresh, seasonal ingredients.
