About Copenhagen holidays

Copenhagen is one of Europe’s most appealing city break destinations, combining grand royal history, contemporary design and a relaxed waterside atmosphere. Denmark’s capital is compact enough to explore easily, yet it offers plenty for a few days of sightseeing, eating and neighbourhood wandering.

Many first visits begin around Nyhavn, the colourful harbour lined with historic townhouses, restaurants and moored wooden boats. From here, it is easy to walk to Amalienborg Palace, the winter residence of the Danish royal family, and on towards Frederik’s Church, often known as the Marble Church. A short distance away, Rosenborg Castle houses royal treasures and sits beside the King’s Garden, a pleasant green space in the city centre.

Copenhagen’s cultural highlights are varied. The National Museum of Denmark gives a strong introduction to Danish history, while the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is known for its sculpture, art and elegant winter garden. Design lovers can explore shops, galleries and museums that reflect the city’s reputation for furniture, interiors and clean Scandinavian style. The Round Tower is another favourite, offering city views from its unusual spiral walkway.

The city is also made for exploring by neighbourhood. Indre By, the old centre, is home to many major landmarks and the pedestrian shopping street Strøget. Vesterbro has a lively food and bar scene, particularly around the Meatpacking District, while Nørrebro is known for independent shops, cafés and multicultural dining. Christianshavn has canals, historic streets and access to the distinctive community of Christiania.

Food is a major part of a Copenhagen holiday. Visitors can try traditional open sandwiches, known as smørrebrød, as well as bakeries serving excellent pastries and coffee. The city has a strong restaurant scene, from informal food markets to acclaimed Nordic dining, so it is worth planning a few meals in advance if food is a focus of your trip.

Copenhagen is especially enjoyable on foot, by bike or using its efficient public transport. Whether you are interested in castles, museums, architecture, shopping or simply soaking up the atmosphere by the harbour, it is a city that feels welcoming, stylish and easy to navigate.
