Athens is one of Greece’s most rewarding holiday regions, combining world-famous ancient sites with lively neighbourhoods, mountain views and an attractive coastline along the Saronic Gulf. For many visitors, the main draw is the Greek capital itself, where the Acropolis, Parthenon, Ancient Agora and Panathenaic Stadium bring classical history into the heart of the modern city. Around them, districts such as Plaka, Monastiraki and Psyrri offer a mix of traditional tavernas, small shops, rooftop bars and cafés tucked into narrow streets.

The wider Athens region is not just about sightseeing. South of the centre, the Athenian Riviera stretches through coastal areas such as Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza. These resorts are popular with holidaymakers who want to combine city culture with time by the sea. Beaches here range from organised stretches with sunbeds and facilities to smaller coves, while Vouliagmeni is also known for its natural lake, where visitors come to swim in mineral-rich waters.

Food is a major part of an Athens holiday. You can keep things simple with souvlaki, gyros and Greek salad, or settle into a neighbourhood taverna for grilled fish, meze and local wine. The city’s central markets and bakeries are also worth seeking out, particularly if you enjoy trying everyday Greek flavours rather than only eating in tourist areas.

There are excellent day trip options too. Cape Sounion, at the southern tip of Attica, is home to the Temple of Poseidon and is especially popular for its sea views. Piraeus, Athens’ historic port, is useful for onward ferry travel to the islands, but it also has waterfront dining areas and a maritime feel of its own. Inland, Mount Lycabettus and the hills around the city provide some of the best viewpoints across Athens towards the coast.
