Holidays to the Thessaloniki region combine one of Greece’s most characterful cities with easy access to the Thermaic Gulf coastline, relaxed seaside towns and varied countryside. It is a good choice for travellers who want more than a fly-and-flop break, with history, food, waterfront walks and beaches all within reach.
Thessaloniki city is the natural centre of the region. Its seafront promenade is ideal for a gentle stroll, with views across the gulf and landmarks such as the White Tower close by. The city has a long and layered history, reflected in its Roman remains, Byzantine churches, Ottoman monuments and Jewish heritage. Ano Poli, the old upper town, offers atmospheric lanes, traditional houses and broad views over the city and sea, while museums such as the Archaeological Museum and Museum of Byzantine Culture are useful stops for understanding northern Greece.
Food is one of Thessaloniki’s biggest draws. The region is known for casual tavernas, seafood restaurants, bakeries and meze-style dining. In the city, the Modiano and Kapani market areas are good places to get a feel for everyday local flavours, from olives and spices to pastries such as bougatsa. Along the coast, places such as Perea, Agia Triada and Nea Michaniona offer fish tavernas and a more laid-back seaside atmosphere.
Beach holidays are possible in the Thessaloniki region, although the best-known sandy beaches of Halkidiki lie further south-east. Closer to Thessaloniki, Perea and Agia Triada are convenient for a coastal stay near the airport and city, while Epanomi and Potamos beach offer a more open setting with views across the gulf. On the eastern side of the region, Stavros and Asprovalta are established seaside resorts with long beaches and a traditional Greek holiday feel.
Beyond the coast, the region has wetlands, lakes and hills that appeal to visitors interested in nature and gentle exploring. The Axios Delta area is known for birdlife, while Lake Volvi and the surrounding countryside provide a quieter contrast to the city. With good road links and an international airport, Thessaloniki also works well as a base for wider northern Greece, including day trips towards Halkidiki, Mount Olympus or ancient Macedonian sites.
