Akureyri is Iceland’s main northern city, set at the head of Eyjafjörður fjord with mountains rising on either side. The city’s best-known landmark is Akureyrarkirkja, the hilltop church designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, whose steps give wide views over the town and fjord. Akureyri Botanical Garden is another highlight, especially in summer, with an impressive collection of hardy plants grown just below the Arctic Circle.

For culture and history, the Akureyri Museum and the old town area offer a good introduction to the city’s past as a trading and fishing centre. The cultural venue Hof, by the harbour, hosts concerts and events, while local galleries and small museums help show the creative side of the region. Food is a major part of a visit too, with restaurants serving Icelandic lamb, Arctic char, seafood and modern Nordic dishes, alongside relaxed bakeries and coffee shops.

Akureyri is also well placed for sightseeing beyond the city. Popular day trips include Goðafoss waterfall, Lake Mývatn’s volcanic landscapes, geothermal areas and lava formations, and whale-watching trips from nearby harbours. In winter, travellers may have chances to see the Northern Lights when conditions are right, and the nearby Hlíðarfjall area is a recognised spot for skiing and snowboarding.

Holidays to Akureyri suit travellers who want a smaller Icelandic city with dramatic scenery, local culture and easy access to some of the north’s most memorable natural sights. It is quieter than Reykjavík, but that is part of its appeal: a friendly, walkable base with fjord views, distinctive northern character and plenty to discover at a comfortable pace.
