About Mellieha holidays

Mellieha is one of Malta’s best-known northern resorts, set around a hilltop village with sweeping views down to Mellieha Bay. It suits holidaymakers who want a relaxed base with easy access to the sea, countryside walks and some of the island’s most scenic coastal spots. The atmosphere is quieter than Malta’s busier nightlife areas, but there is still a good choice of places to eat and drink, particularly around the village centre and the bay.

The main draw is Mellieha Bay, also known as Ghadira Bay, one of Malta’s largest sandy beaches. Its shallow, sheltered water makes it a popular choice for swimming, paddling and watersports in the warmer months. Beach facilities are usually easy to find in season, and the bay has cafés and casual restaurants nearby. For a quieter change of scene, the surrounding northern coastline has smaller coves and viewpoints, though some are rockier and better suited to walking or swimming than traditional sunbathing.

The village itself has a traditional Maltese feel, with stepped streets, limestone buildings and the prominent Parish Church of Mellieha overlooking the bay. Close by, the Mellieha Air Raid Shelters give an interesting insight into Malta’s wartime history. Walkers can explore the area around the Red Tower, Ghadira Nature Reserve and the nearby countryside, where views stretch towards Comino and Gozo.

Restaurants in Mellieha range from laid-back pizzerias and family-run Maltese eateries to seafood restaurants and hotel dining. Evenings are generally low-key, with bars, terraces and live music in some venues rather than a large clubbing scene. This makes Mellieha a good choice for couples, families and anyone looking for a comfortable resort with a gentler pace.

Mellieha is also well placed for exploring northern Malta. The ferry terminal at Cirkewwa is a short journey away for day trips to Gozo, while boats to the Blue Lagoon on Comino are widely available from the area. With its sandy beach, village character and access to some of Malta’s best coastal scenery, Mellieha is a practical and appealing base for a Malta holiday.
