Cancun Holidays

Cancun is one of Mexico’s best-known holiday regions, set on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is best known for its long white-sand beaches, clear turquoise sea and well-developed resort areas, but it also offers easy access to Mayan heritage, nature reserves and island day trips.

The main holiday area is the Cancun Hotel Zone, a narrow strip between the Caribbean Sea and Nichupte Lagoon. This is where many of the larger beachfront hotels, all-inclusive resorts, restaurants, shopping areas and entertainment venues are found. Beaches such as Playa Delfines and Playa Forum are among the most recognised, with soft sand and bright blue water, although sea conditions can vary depending on the season and weather.

North of the Hotel Zone, Playa Mujeres offers a quieter, more spacious resort setting with modern hotels and a calmer feel. Nearby Isla Mujeres is a popular day trip, reached by ferry, with relaxed streets, snorkelling spots and viewpoints over the Caribbean. South of Cancun, Puerto Morelos has a more low-key atmosphere, a central square, beachfront restaurants and access to the Mesoamerican Reef, making it a good choice for snorkelling and diving excursions.

Cancun is also a practical base for exploring beyond the coast. Many visitors take trips to Chichen Itza, one of Mexico’s most famous archaeological sites, or to Tulum, where Mayan ruins overlook the sea. Cenotes, the natural freshwater sinkholes found across the Yucatan, are another memorable experience and are often included on organised tours.

Food is a highlight of the region, from hotel dining and international restaurants to local dishes such as tacos, ceviche, cochinita pibil and fresh seafood. The atmosphere varies widely depending on where you stay: the Hotel Zone is lively and convenient, Playa Mujeres is more relaxed, and Puerto Morelos feels smaller and more traditional.

For UK holidaymakers, Cancun suits those looking for a beach-based escape with plenty of optional days out. It combines resort comfort with Caribbean scenery, cultural excursions and good transport links, making it one of the easiest parts of Mexico to visit for a sunshine holiday.
