Tromsø is a popular gateway for winter northern lights trips, while summer brings long daylight hours and the midnight sun in the far north. The Lofoten Islands are known for jagged peaks, red fishing cabins, sheltered bays and excellent walking, as well as a strong connection to fishing culture.

Norwegian food is shaped by the coast, mountains and seasons. Expect plenty of seafood, including cod, salmon and prawns, along with game, dairy produce, berries and traditional baked goods. Eating out can be expensive compared with the UK, so self-catering and casual cafés are useful options.

Norway is best for nature holidays, touring breaks, rail adventures, city-and-scenery combinations and winter trips focused on the Arctic. It is not a typical hot-weather beach destination, but its clean coast, islands and fjords are ideal for kayaking, walking, photography and peaceful outdoor escapes.
