About Krakow holidays

Krakow is one of Poland’s most rewarding city break destinations, combining a beautifully preserved historic centre with lively neighbourhoods, thoughtful museums and excellent food. Its compact layout makes it easy to explore on foot, with many of the main sights clustered around the UNESCO-listed Old Town.

The natural starting point is the Main Market Square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. Here you’ll find the Cloth Hall, St Mary’s Basilica and a steady flow of cafés, street musicians and horse-drawn carriages. From the square, narrow lanes lead to churches, courtyards, bookshops and cellar restaurants, while the Planty Park forms a green ring around the old city walls.

South of the Old Town, Wawel Hill is central to Krakow’s identity. Wawel Royal Castle and the cathedral reflect centuries of Polish history, and the riverside setting above the Vistula adds to the atmosphere. Nearby Kazimierz, the city’s historic Jewish quarter, is one of Krakow’s most characterful areas. Its synagogues, memorials and museums sit alongside independent cafés, bars, galleries and restaurants serving both Jewish and modern Polish cooking.

Across the river, Podgórze offers a more reflective side of the city, with important sites linked to Krakow’s wartime history, including Ghetto Heroes Square and the former enamel factory associated with Oskar Schindler. These places are best visited with time and care, as they add important context to the city’s 20th-century story.

Krakow is also a strong choice for food-focused travellers. Traditional dishes such as pierogi, żurek and bigos are widely available, while the city also has contemporary restaurants, bakeries and casual milk bars. For shopping, the Old Town is good for amber, crafts and souvenirs, while Kazimierz and surrounding streets have smaller independent shops.

Popular day trips include the Wieliczka Salt Mine, known for its underground chambers and chapels, and Auschwitz-Birkenau, a deeply significant memorial and museum. With rich history, walkable streets and a relaxed café culture, Krakow suits travellers who want a city break with depth, atmosphere and plenty to discover.
