Albufeira is one of the Algarve’s best-known holiday resorts, combining sandy beaches, a lively town centre and plenty of places to eat, drink and explore. Set on Portugal’s southern coast, it suits travellers who want a classic sun holiday with the convenience of a well-developed resort, while still having access to attractive old streets, coastal views and day trips around the region.

The resort is spread across a few distinct areas. The Old Town is the most characterful part, with whitewashed buildings, cobbled lanes, shops, cafés and restaurants leading down towards the beachfront. It has a relaxed feel by day and becomes busier in the evening, particularly around the main square and surrounding streets. To the east, the area around Avenida Sá Carneiro, often known as “The Strip”, is more nightlife-focused, with bars, casual restaurants and late-night venues.

Beaches are a major part of holidays in Albufeira. Praia dos Pescadores and Praia do Peneco sit close to the Old Town, making them easy choices for a day by the sea without needing transport. Both offer wide stretches of sand and scenic cliffs nearby. A little further along the coast, Praia da Oura is convenient for those staying near the newer resort area, while smaller coves and cliff-backed beaches can be found along the surrounding coastline.

Food in Albufeira ranges from simple beachside snacks to traditional Portuguese restaurants and international options. Seafood is widely available, and you’ll also find Algarve favourites such as grilled fish, cataplana and piri-piri chicken. The resort is very used to UK visitors, so menus are generally easy to navigate, but there are still plenty of local flavours to try.

Popular things to do include boat trips from Albufeira Marina, many of which explore sea caves and the dramatic Algarve coastline. Dolphin-watching trips are also offered, although sightings are never guaranteed. Inland, the surrounding area has golf courses, countryside villages and markets within reach, while Faro, Lagos and the famous Benagil coastline are popular day-trip options. Overall, Albufeira is a practical and varied Algarve base, especially if you want beaches, restaurants and evening entertainment close at hand.
