About Lagos holidays

Lagos is one of the Algarve’s most appealing holiday bases, combining a historic centre, attractive beaches and a relaxed marina setting. It has more character than many purpose-built resorts, with cobbled streets, tiled buildings, small squares and remnants of its old town walls. Days here can be as easy-going or active as you like, whether you are wandering between cafés, heading out on the water or finding a sheltered cove for a swim.

The beaches are a major part of Lagos’ appeal. Close to town, Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo are known for their golden cliffs, clear water and dramatic rock formations, although access can involve steps and they can feel busy in peak season. Meia Praia, on the other side of the marina, is much wider and longer, making it a good choice for space, walks and watersports. The headland at Ponta da Piedade is one of the area’s standout sights, with limestone arches, caves and sea stacks best seen from the clifftop paths or on a small boat trip when conditions allow.

Lagos is also a good choice if you enjoy eating out. The old town has a wide range of restaurants, from traditional Portuguese places serving grilled fish, cataplana and local seafood to relaxed international options. The marina adds more waterfront dining and is a pleasant spot for a drink, especially in the evening.

Nightlife in Lagos is lively without feeling as intense as some bigger Algarve party resorts. You will find late-opening bars, music venues and a sociable atmosphere in the centre, particularly in summer, but it still suits couples, groups and families who want somewhere with atmosphere rather than non-stop clubbing.

Popular things to do include boat trips to the caves and cliffs, kayaking or paddleboarding around the coast, dolphin-watching excursions, coastal walks and day trips to nearby towns such as Sagres or Portimão. With a mix of beach time, history, good food and scenic coastline, Lagos works well for UK holidaymakers who want a classic Algarve break with plenty of local character.

Lagos Holidays FAQs

Yes. Lagos has several excellent beaches nearby, from the dramatic coves of Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo to the long, sandy Meia Praia. Some smaller beaches involve steps and can get busy in summer, so Meia Praia is often better if you want more space.
