Olhão is a characterful fishing town in the eastern Algarve, set on the edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It feels more local and lived-in than many of the Algarve’s purpose-built resorts, making it a good choice for holidaymakers who want seafood, island beaches and a relaxed waterfront atmosphere rather than a full-on resort strip.
The town’s heart is around the waterfront, where two distinctive red-brick market halls face the lagoon. Inside and around the markets you’ll find stalls selling fish, fruit, vegetables and regional produce, with cafés nearby for a coffee or a simple lunch. The old quarter behind the waterfront is worth a wander, with narrow lanes, whitewashed houses and flat-roofed buildings that reflect Olhão’s Moorish-influenced architecture.
Olhão itself does not have a sandy town beach, but it is one of the best bases in the Algarve for reaching the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa. Regular ferries and seasonal boat services run from the harbour to islands such as Armona, Culatra and Farol, where you’ll find long sandy beaches, clear shallow water and a quieter feel than the busier central Algarve resorts. Boat trips through the lagoon are also popular, offering the chance to see salt marshes, birdlife and small island communities.
Food is a major part of the appeal. Olhão has a strong fishing heritage, so seafood features heavily on local menus, from grilled fish and clams to cataplana-style dishes. Restaurants range from simple waterfront places to more contemporary dining spots, especially around the marina and market area.
Evenings in Olhão are generally low-key. There are bars and cafés for a drink after dinner, but nightlife is not the main reason to come here. Instead, the town suits couples, independent travellers and anyone who enjoys a slower pace, good food and easy access to nature.
Olhão is also practical for a holiday, with Faro Airport a relatively short drive away and train links along the Algarve coast. It works well as a base for exploring Faro, Tavira and the wider Ria Formosa, while still offering plenty of local atmosphere of its own.
