The old town and riverfront suit low-key dinners and drinks, while Praia da Rocha has a busier holiday atmosphere, with bars, music venues and a casino. It is not as full-on as some larger party resorts, but there is enough nightlife for couples and groups wanting a sociable break.

Popular things to do include boat trips along the coast, cave and dolphin-watching excursions, kayaking, coastal walks and visits to nearby towns. Portimão also works well for travellers who want a beach holiday without being limited to the beach, offering culture, dining and easy access to the wider western Algarve.
