Quarteira is a straightforward, seaside Algarve resort with a more local feel than some of its glossier neighbours. Set between Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo, it is well suited to UK holidaymakers who want easy beach days, relaxed meals out and a practical base for exploring the central Algarve.

The main appeal is the long sandy beach, Praia de Quarteira, which runs alongside a broad seafront promenade. It is an easy place for a stroll, with cafés, ice-cream stops and restaurants facing the sea. The beach is backed in places by apartment blocks and hotels, so the resort feels more lived-in than boutique, but that also means useful shops, supermarkets and everyday services are close at hand. Further east, around Forte Novo and towards Almargem, the coast becomes a little quieter and more natural in feel.

Food is a strong reason to stay in Quarteira. The resort has a fishing heritage, and seafood is widely available, from simple grilled fish to cataplana and shellfish dishes. There are also plenty of casual Portuguese restaurants, cafés and international options, so eating out is easy without needing to dress up or travel far. The local market and fish market are good places to get a glimpse of day-to-day life in the town.

Evenings in Quarteira are generally low-key. Expect seafront drinks, relaxed bars and late dinners rather than large clubs. If you want a smarter marina setting or a livelier choice of bars, Vilamoura is close by and can be reached by taxi or on foot from some parts of Quarteira.

Popular things to do include walking or cycling along the seafront, taking boat trips from nearby Vilamoura Marina, visiting Aquashow Park just outside the resort, or playing golf at one of the well-known courses in the surrounding area. Faro Airport is within easy reach, making Quarteira a convenient choice for a simple Algarve beach holiday with plenty nearby but a quieter atmosphere at base.
