Sagres sits on the far western edge of the Algarve, where the coastline feels wilder and more dramatic than in many of the region’s larger resorts. It is a small, low-key place with a relaxed pace, popular with travellers who want Atlantic scenery, fresh seafood, surfing and access to some of Portugal’s most striking headlands rather than big-resort bustle.

The beaches are one of the main reasons to stay here. Praia da Mareta is the most central and convenient, with a broad sweep of sand close to cafés and restaurants. Praia do Tonel, just west of the town, is known for powerful Atlantic waves and is especially popular with surfers. Praia do Martinhal, on the eastern side of Sagres, is often a little more sheltered and has lovely views across the bay. Conditions can vary, so it is worth checking local advice before swimming, especially on surf beaches.

A visit to the Fortaleza de Sagres is one of the classic things to do. The fortress stands on a windswept headland with wide sea views and walking paths around the cliffs. Nearby, Cabo de São Vicente is mainland Europe’s south-western tip, famous for its lighthouse, rugged cliffs and sunset views. The surrounding coastline is also excellent for walking, with sections of cliff path and routes that connect into the wider Costa Vicentina area.

Sagres has a modest but enjoyable food scene, with restaurants and simple eateries serving grilled fish, seafood, Portuguese dishes and casual international options. Evenings are generally relaxed. You will find bars where surfers and walkers gather for drinks, but Sagres is not a destination for large clubs or late-night nightlife on the scale of Albufeira or Lagos.

Holidays in Sagres suit couples, independent travellers, surfers and anyone who enjoys a quieter Algarve base with big coastal landscapes. A car is useful if you want to explore nearby beaches, villages and viewpoints, although the main resort area is compact enough for many visitors to get around on foot.
