Lisbon is one of Europe’s most characterful city break destinations, set across steep hills beside the River Tagus and shaped by centuries of maritime history. It is a city best enjoyed at an unhurried pace, with tiled façades, viewpoints, tram-lined streets and atmospheric neighbourhoods that reward wandering as much as sightseeing.
Many first visits begin in Baixa and Chiado, the elegant downtown districts rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Here you’ll find grand squares, traditional cafés, independent shops and easy links to the rest of the city. Above them, Bairro Alto is known for its narrow lanes, small bars and restaurants, while nearby Príncipe Real has a more relaxed, stylish feel with gardens, boutiques and places to eat.
Alfama is Lisbon at its most historic. Its winding streets climb towards São Jorge Castle, passing old churches, tiled houses and viewpoints over the rooftops and river. This is also one of the best areas to experience fado, Portugal’s soulful traditional music, usually performed in intimate restaurants and music houses.
Belém is essential for understanding Lisbon’s Age of Discoveries heritage. The Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery and Monument to the Discoveries sit close to the waterfront, while the area is also famous for pastéis de nata, the custard tarts strongly associated with the city. Art and culture are well represented too, from the Gulbenkian Museum’s wide-ranging collection to the contemporary exhibitions and architecture around the MAAT.
Lisbon is a rewarding place for food lovers. Menus often feature bacalhau, grilled fish, seafood rice, pork dishes, cheeses and pastries, with everything from simple neighbourhood tascas to modern Portuguese restaurants. Shopping ranges from historic shops and bookshops to design stores, markets and the large Avenida da Liberdade area.
Getting around is part of the experience, whether you use the metro, funiculars, lifts or classic yellow trams. The hills can be tiring, so comfortable shoes are useful. With its mix of history, viewpoints, culture, food and distinctive neighbourhoods, Lisbon suits travellers looking for a lively but manageable city break with plenty to explore over a few days.
