About Madeira holidays

Madeira is a distinctive Portuguese island region in the Atlantic, known for dramatic mountain scenery, lush gardens and a rugged coastline rather than long stretches of sand. It suits UK holidaymakers who want warm weather, good food and plenty to see beyond the hotel pool.

Funchal, the island’s capital, is the main base for many holidays. It has a seafront promenade, historic streets, restaurants, the Mercado dos Lavradores, cable car rides up towards Monte and easy access to botanical gardens. Nearby Lido and hotel areas offer sea-view stays and swimming complexes, while Caniço is a quieter choice with a relaxed coastal feel and good access to the airport and Funchal.

For a sunnier south-coast setting, Calheta and Ponta do Sol are popular, with steep green hillsides dropping towards the sea. Calheta has one of Madeira’s best-known man-made sandy beaches, while Machico, close to the airport, also has a sheltered sandy bay. Much of the island’s coastline is rocky, with sea pools and bathing platforms more common than traditional beaches. Porto Moniz, in the north-west, is famous for its natural volcanic swimming pools, and Seixal is known for its black-sand beach and mountain backdrop.

Madeira is especially rewarding for walkers. The levada trails follow old irrigation channels through forest, valleys and viewpoints, with routes ranging from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes. The Laurissilva forest is UNESCO-listed, and the high mountain routes around Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo offer some of the island’s most memorable views when conditions are clear.

Food is a real part of the experience. Restaurants serve fresh fish, espetada beef skewers, bolo do caco garlic bread and local specialities such as black scabbardfish with banana. Madeira wine is widely available, and poncha, made with sugar cane spirit, honey and citrus, is a traditional local drink.

Madeira works well for couples, walkers, garden lovers and anyone who enjoys scenic drives, viewpoints and boat trips. Whale and dolphin-watching excursions run from Funchal and other harbours, while day trips can take you from the capital to mountains, forests, villages and the wilder north coast.

Madeira Holidays FAQs

Madeira is not mainly a classic beach destination. Its coastline is mostly rocky and dramatic, with sea pools, bathing platforms and a few sandy beaches. Calheta and Machico have sheltered sandy beaches, while Seixal has a black-sand beach. If beaches are your top priority, nearby Porto Santo is better known for its long sandy shoreline.
