About Dublin holidays

Dublin is a lively, walkable capital with a strong sense of history, a famously sociable atmosphere and plenty to fill a short break or longer city holiday. Set on the east coast of the Republic of Ireland where the River Liffey meets Dublin Bay, the city blends Georgian streets, medieval lanes, literary landmarks and modern museums in a compact centre that is easy to explore on foot.

Many visits begin around Trinity College, home to the Old Library and the Book of Kells, before continuing towards Grafton Street for shops, buskers and cafés. Nearby St Stephen’s Green offers a calm break from the city streets, while the National Gallery of Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland give useful insight into Irish art, archaeology and history. North of the river, O’Connell Street, the General Post Office and the surrounding area are closely linked with modern Irish history.

Dublin Castle and Christ Church Cathedral reflect the city’s medieval past, while Kilmainham Gaol, a short journey from the centre, is one of the most powerful places to learn about Ireland’s struggle for independence. For literary connections, visitors can follow links to James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, W. B. Yeats and Samuel Beckett, with statues, museums and walking tours helping to bring the city’s writing heritage to life.

Temple Bar is the best-known area for traditional pubs and live music, though it can be busy and tourist-focused. For a more local feel, explore neighbourhoods such as Stoneybatter, Portobello, Ranelagh and Smithfield, where you’ll find independent restaurants, relaxed bars and cafés. Dublin’s food scene includes everything from classic pub meals and seafood to contemporary Irish cooking and international restaurants.

Shopping ranges from familiar high-street names on Grafton Street and Henry Street to boutiques, markets and design shops around the Creative Quarter and George’s Street Arcade. If you want a change of pace, easy day trips include the coastal towns of Howth and Dún Laoghaire, or the ancient landscapes of the Boyne Valley. With its mix of culture, history, food and friendly pubs, Dublin is an excellent choice for a city break from the UK.
