About Murcia holidays

Murcia is a sun-warmed region in south-east Spain, set between Andalusia and the Valencian Community, with a mix of Mediterranean coastline, historic cities, quiet countryside and reliable holiday resorts. For UK travellers, it is best known for the Costa Cálida, a stretch of coast that includes the calm waters of the Mar Menor, the long sandbar of La Manga, and seaside towns such as Los Alcázares, Santiago de la Ribera, Águilas and Mazarrón.

The Mar Menor is one of Murcia’s most distinctive features. This large coastal lagoon is separated from the Mediterranean by La Manga, creating sheltered, shallow waters that are popular for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing. La Manga itself offers a more developed resort feel, with beaches on both the lagoon and Mediterranean sides, while Los Alcázares is a favourite for a relaxed beach holiday with a promenade, casual restaurants and easy access to the water.

Beyond the main resorts, Murcia has a more natural side. Calblanque Regional Park, near Cartagena, is known for its undeveloped coastline, coves and walking trails, while the coast around Águilas and Mazarrón offers a mix of sandy bays, rocky scenery and boat trips. Inland, Sierra Espuña Regional Park is a good choice for walking, cycling and scenic drives through pine-covered hills.

Murcia also suits travellers who like culture and food. Cartagena is one of the region’s standout places to visit, with Roman remains, a harbourfront and museums linked to its long maritime history. Murcia city, the regional capital, has an attractive old centre, a striking cathedral, squares lined with cafés and a strong tapas scene. Lorca is another worthwhile inland stop, known for its castle and historic streets.

Food is a real part of the region’s appeal. Murcia is sometimes called Spain’s market garden, and menus often feature fresh vegetables, rice dishes, seafood from the coast, grilled meats and local tapas. Whether you want a simple resort break by the Mar Menor, a self-drive holiday exploring coast and countryside, or a base for day trips to historic towns, Murcia offers a varied and often less crowded alternative to some of Spain’s better-known holiday regions.
