About Stockholm holidays

Stockholm is one of Europe’s most distinctive city break destinations, spread across a series of islands where grand architecture, calm waterways and green spaces are part of everyday life. Sweden’s capital is easy to enjoy at a relaxed pace, with much of its appeal found in walking between neighbourhoods, crossing bridges, taking ferries and stopping for coffee and a cinnamon bun along the way.

The historic heart of the city is Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s old town. Its narrow lanes, colourful merchants’ houses and cobbled squares make it a natural starting point for sightseeing. Here you’ll find the Royal Palace, Stockholm Cathedral and the Nobel Prize Museum, as well as plenty of small shops and cafés tucked into centuries-old streets.

For museums, Stockholm is especially strong. Djurgården is home to several of the city’s best-known attractions, including the Vasa Museum, where a remarkably preserved 17th-century warship is displayed, and Skansen, an open-air museum exploring Swedish life, traditions and historic buildings. Art and photography fans may want to visit Fotografiska, while design-minded travellers can explore the city’s interiors shops, galleries and stylish department stores.

Each neighbourhood has its own character. Södermalm is known for independent shops, vintage stores, relaxed bars, viewpoints and a creative atmosphere. Östermalm offers elegant streets, smart boutiques and the well-known Östermalms Saluhall food hall. Norrmalm is the main commercial centre, useful for shopping and transport connections, while Vasastan has a quieter local feel with cafés, restaurants and leafy squares.

Food is a real part of the Stockholm experience. Traditional Swedish dishes, modern Nordic cooking, bakeries and international restaurants are all easy to find. Fika, the Swedish coffee break, is worth making time for, whether in a classic café or a contemporary bakery.

Stockholm also offers plenty of simple outdoor pleasures. You can walk along the waterfront, take a boat trip through the harbour, visit city parks or head out into the wider Stockholm archipelago for a day among islands and coastal scenery. With its mix of history, design, culture and easy access to nature, Stockholm works well for a thoughtful, scenic and rewarding city holiday.
