Bodrum is one of Turkey’s best-known Aegean resorts, combining a lively harbour town atmosphere with beaches, historic sights and easy access to boat trips around the peninsula. Set around a broad bay and watched over by Bodrum Castle, it feels more cosmopolitan than many purpose-built resorts, with a mix of marina-side restaurants, traditional meyhanes, boutique shops, bars and small hotels spread through whitewashed streets.

The resort is a good choice if you want more than a simple beach break. In the centre, beaches are generally narrow and shingly, with sunbeds, cafés and clear water close to the harbour and old town. For more space, many visitors head to nearby bays around the Bodrum Peninsula, including Gümbet, Bitez and Ortakent, which are easy to reach by taxi, dolmuş or boat. Boat trips are one of the most popular things to do, with routes usually stopping at quiet coves and swimming spots along the coast.

Bodrum’s main landmark is the Castle of St Peter, a striking medieval fortress overlooking the waterfront. It also houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, reflecting the area’s long maritime history. The ancient theatre on the hillside is another worthwhile stop, especially for views across the town and bay. Around the marina and bazaar streets, you’ll find plenty of places to wander, shop for leather goods, textiles and jewellery, or pause for Turkish coffee.

Food is a big part of a Bodrum holiday. Expect fresh seafood, grilled meats, meze, pide and Turkish breakfasts, alongside international options in the busier tourist areas. Evenings can be relaxed or lively depending on where you go: the marina and old town offer smart bars and waterfront dining, while Bar Street and nearby Gümbet are better suited to late nights.

Bodrum works well for couples, groups of friends and travellers who like a resort with character, good restaurants and plenty to do. It is also a practical base for exploring the wider peninsula, with regular local transport and Milas-Bodrum Airport within convenient reach.
