About New York holidays

New York State offers far more than its famous city skyline, making it a varied choice for a USA holiday. For many UK visitors, New York City is the natural starting point, with world-class museums, landmark sights such as the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building, Broadway theatres, neighbourhood dining and easy-to-use public transport. It is also a practical gateway for exploring the wider region by train, car or internal flight.

Beyond the city, the state has a striking mix of rivers, mountains, lakes and coastline. The Hudson Valley is known for its historic estates, small towns, galleries, farm-to-table restaurants and scenic river views, making it a good option for a slower-paced break after a few days in Manhattan. Further north, the Adirondack Mountains offer forests, lakes and outdoor activities, with Lake Placid one of the best-known bases for hiking, canoeing and exploring mountain scenery.

Western New York is home to Niagara Falls, one of the state’s most dramatic natural attractions. The falls can be visited from the US side, with viewpoints, boat trips in season and walking trails in the surrounding state park. The Finger Lakes region is another rewarding area, with long glacial lakes, waterfalls, pretty villages and wineries, particularly around Seneca and Cayuga Lakes.

For coastal scenery, Long Island stretches east from New York City and offers Atlantic beaches, harbour towns and seafood restaurants. The Hamptons and Montauk are well-known summer destinations, while quieter parts of the island suit travellers looking for coastal walks, lighthouses and a relaxed seaside feel.

Food is a major part of a holiday in New York State. In the city, you can find everything from classic delis and pizza slices to Michelin-starred restaurants and diverse international neighbourhoods. Upstate areas are strong on local produce, craft drinks, lake fish, farmers’ markets and relaxed dining in small towns.

Whether you want an energetic city break, a scenic road trip, autumn colours, waterfall walks or a twin-centre holiday combining New York City with nature, New York State gives UK travellers plenty of ways to shape a memorable trip.
