About Sofia holidays

Sofia is one of Europe’s most understated capitals, a city where Roman ruins, Orthodox churches, Ottoman-era mosques and grand 20th-century boulevards sit within easy walking distance of one another. Set at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, Bulgaria’s capital has a relaxed pace, a compact centre and enough history, culture and food to make it a rewarding choice for a short city break or a longer stay.

Start in the historic heart of the city, where many of Sofia’s best-known sights are close together. The gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the landmark most visitors come to see, while nearby Saint Sofia Church, the Russian Church and the National Theatre add to the city’s distinctive mix of architectural styles. Around Serdika, you can see remains of the ancient Roman city built into the modern streetscape, including ruins beside the metro station and government buildings.

Sofia is also a good city for museums and galleries. The National Archaeological Museum is useful for understanding Bulgaria’s long history, while the National Art Gallery and the Museum of Socialist Art offer different perspectives on the country’s culture and more recent past. For a quieter break, the city has several green spaces, including Borisova Gradina and the City Garden in front of the National Theatre.

Neighbourhoods help give Sofia its character. The central streets around Vitosha Boulevard are popular for cafés, restaurants and shopping, with a mix of international brands and local shops. The area around Shishman Street is known for independent bars, coffee spots and small boutiques, while the Women’s Market offers a more traditional local atmosphere with food stalls and everyday produce.

Eating out is a highlight of a holiday in Sofia. Travellers can try Bulgarian dishes such as shopska salad, grilled meats, banitsa and hearty stews, as well as modern restaurants serving international cuisine. Many places are informal, good value compared with many Western European capitals, and well suited to relaxed lunches or evening meals.

Sofia also works well as a base for day trips. Vitosha Mountain is close enough for walking and viewpoints in good weather, while Boyana Church, a UNESCO-listed medieval church on the city’s outskirts, is one of the area’s most important cultural sights. With a walkable centre, efficient metro links and a fascinating blend of influences, Sofia offers a city break that feels historic, lived-in and refreshingly down to earth.
