Bulgaria is a varied and good-value holiday destination, with Black Sea beaches, historic towns, mountain scenery and lively cities all within one country. For many UK holidaymakers, the summer resorts along the Black Sea coast are the main draw. Sunny Beach is the best-known resort, with a long sandy beach, plenty of hotels, restaurants and entertainment, while nearby Nessebar adds a more traditional feel with its cobbled streets, churches and UNESCO-listed old town. Further north, Golden Sands offers another popular beach base close to Varna, and smaller coastal towns such as Sozopol and Pomorie appeal to those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.

Away from the coast, Bulgaria has a rich mix of history and landscapes. Sofia, the capital, combines Orthodox churches, museums, parks and views towards Vitosha Mountain, making it a useful choice for a city break or as a starting point for exploring further. Plovdiv is one of the country’s most appealing cultural stops, known for its Roman theatre, colourful old town and creative Kapana district. For mountain holidays, the Rila, Pirin and Rhodope ranges offer hiking, monasteries, lakes and traditional villages. In winter, resorts such as Bansko and Borovets are popular for skiing and snowboarding.

Bulgarian culture reflects Balkan, Slavic, Ottoman and Orthodox influences, seen in its music, architecture and festivals. Food is hearty and often fresh, with dishes such as shopska salad, banitsa pastries, grilled meats, stews and yoghurt-based specialities widely available. Local wines and rakia are also common, though menus in tourist areas usually include familiar international options.

Bulgaria suits a wide range of holidays: affordable beach breaks, cultural touring, walking in nature, spa stays and winter sports. Travel styles vary considerably by region, so it is worth choosing your base carefully. The coast is best for sun and sea, Sofia and Plovdiv for history and culture, and the mountain areas for outdoor activities and traditional scenery.
