About Gran Canaria holidays

Gran Canaria is one of the most varied islands in the Canaries, offering far more than a straightforward beach break. Its south coast is the main holiday hub, where resorts such as Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Puerto Rico, Amadores and Meloneras are popular with UK travellers looking for reliable sunshine, sandy beaches and plenty of places to eat and drink. Maspalomas is especially distinctive thanks to its sweeping sand dunes, which sit beside a long beach and a protected lagoon area.

The island’s coastline changes from broad, family-friendly beaches in the south to smaller coves, harbour towns and dramatic cliffs elsewhere. Amadores is known for its sheltered bay and calm water, while Puerto de Mogán has a relaxed marina setting with whitewashed buildings, waterside restaurants and boat trips along the coast. Playa del Inglés has a livelier feel, with a wide choice of bars, restaurants and shopping centres, while Meloneras is more laid-back, with a seafront promenade and smart places to dine.

Away from the resorts, Gran Canaria’s interior is one of its biggest surprises. The island has rugged mountains, deep valleys and pine forests, with viewpoints such as Roque Nublo offering memorable scenery. Villages including Tejeda, Teror and Arucas give a different side to the island, with traditional architecture, local cafés and a slower pace. Hiring a car or joining an organised tour is a good way to explore these areas, as public transport is stronger along the main coastal routes than in the mountains.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the island’s capital, is worth a day trip or longer stay. Its historic Vegueta district has cobbled streets, museums and the cathedral, while Las Canteras beach offers a city-meets-seaside atmosphere with a long promenade and plenty of restaurants.

Food in Gran Canaria ranges from international resort dining to Canarian specialities such as papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, grilled fish, local cheeses and stews. Whether you want beach days, scenic drives, walking routes, boat trips or a mix of resort comfort and island culture, Gran Canaria is a flexible choice with plenty to explore beyond the hotel pool.

Gran Canaria Holidays FAQs

The south coast is the most popular area for package holidays, especially Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Puerto Rico, Amadores and Meloneras. Choose Maspalomas for dunes and beach space, Playa del Inglés for a livelier resort feel, Puerto Rico or Amadores for sheltered bays, and Meloneras for a quieter, more polished seafront setting.
