Las Palmas is the lively capital of Gran Canaria and a great choice if you want a holiday with both beach time and a proper local city atmosphere. Set on the island’s north-east coast, it feels more lived-in than many purpose-built resorts, with Canarian culture, shopping streets, museums, markets and seafront promenades all within easy reach.

The main draw for many visitors is Las Canteras, one of Gran Canaria’s best urban beaches. This long sweep of golden sand is backed by a promenade lined with cafés, restaurants and ice-cream stops, making it easy to spend a relaxed day by the sea without feeling cut off from the city. The sheltered sections are popular for swimming, while other parts attract surfers when conditions are right. Playa de Las Alcaravaneras, on the opposite side of the isthmus, offers another central stretch of sand, close to the marina.

Away from the beach, Las Palmas has plenty to explore. Vegueta, the historic old quarter, is known for its colonial architecture, cobbled streets and landmarks such as Santa Ana Cathedral. The Casa de Colón is one of the city’s best-known cultural sights, with exhibitions linked to Columbus and the Canary Islands’ maritime history. Triana, nearby, is good for shopping, cafés and a wander among elegant old buildings.

Food is a real part of the appeal. You’ll find everything from casual tapas bars and Canarian restaurants to seafood spots near the waterfront and modern dining around the city centre. Local dishes often include papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, grilled fish and island cheeses.

Evenings in Las Palmas are sociable rather than purely resort-focused. Around Las Canteras, the promenade stays busy with diners and walkers, while Vegueta and Triana offer bars, restaurants and occasional live music. It is a good base for travellers who like a mix of beach, culture and everyday local life, with the rest of Gran Canaria accessible by road for day trips to mountain villages, the south coast or scenic viewpoints.
