Puerto de la Cruz is one of Tenerife’s most established resorts, set on the island’s greener north coast. It has a very different feel from the larger purpose-built resorts in the south, with a more traditional Canarian character, a working town centre, historic streets and a relaxed seafront atmosphere. It suits holidaymakers who want a mix of coastal scenery, local restaurants, gardens and easy access to some of northern Tenerife’s best sights.

The resort’s coastline is dramatic rather than classically golden, with volcanic rock, Atlantic waves and dark sand beaches. Playa Jardín is the best-known beach, designed with landscaped gardens and backed by views towards Mount Teide on clear days. Playa Martiánez is another central spot, popular with surfers when conditions are suitable. For calmer swimming, many visitors prefer Lago Martiánez, a striking complex of seawater pools created by Canarian artist César Manrique, with sun terraces and sea views.

Puerto de la Cruz is enjoyable to explore on foot. Around Plaza del Charco and the old harbour you’ll find cafés, tapas bars, shops and traditional buildings with wooden balconies. The promenade is ideal for a gentle walk, while the Botanical Garden and Taoro Park offer quieter green spaces away from the seafront. Loro Parque, on the edge of the resort, is one of Tenerife’s best-known visitor attractions and is easily reached from the centre.

Eating out is a big part of a holiday here. You’ll find Canarian restaurants serving fresh fish, papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, grilled meats and local wines, alongside international options aimed at visitors. Evenings are generally relaxed rather than club-focused, with terrace bars, live music venues and late dinners giving the resort a sociable but laid-back feel.

Puerto de la Cruz is also a good base for exploring northern Tenerife. The historic town of La Orotava is close by, while Mount Teide National Park can be visited on a day trip. Because the north coast is lusher than the south, the weather can be slightly cooler and cloudier at times, but that greener setting is part of the resort’s appeal.
