Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and one of the most varied holiday destinations in Spain, with warm weather for much of the year, a dramatic volcanic interior and a coastline ranging from busy resort beaches to quieter coves. It suits travellers who want an easy fly-and-flop break, but there is plenty to explore beyond the hotel pool.

The south coast is the main holiday hub, especially around Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos. Costa Adeje is known for smart hotels, seafront promenades and sandy beaches such as Playa del Duque and Playa Fañabé. Playa de las Américas has a livelier feel, with plenty of bars, restaurants and watersports, while Los Cristianos has a more traditional harbour area and ferry links to nearby islands. Further south, Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf are popular with golfers and visitors looking for a quieter base close to the airport.

Tenerife’s scenery is a major part of its appeal. Teide National Park, home to Mount Teide, is the island’s standout natural attraction, with lava fields, pine forests and wide views across the island on clear days. The north has a greener, more traditional character, with places such as Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava and Garachico offering historic streets, gardens, sea pools and a slower pace. The Anaga Rural Park in the north-east is excellent for walking, with rugged mountains, laurel forest and viewpoints over the Atlantic.

Beach days are easy to plan, though the coastline is varied. Many beaches have dark volcanic sand, while some resort beaches have lighter imported sand. Playa de las Teresitas near Santa Cruz is one of the best-known golden-sand beaches, and the south coast has several well-equipped beaches with cafés and sunbeds.

Food in Tenerife ranges from resort restaurants serving international favourites to Canarian tavernas offering dishes such as papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, fresh fish, grilled meats and local cheeses. Whether you want coastal walks, boat trips, whale and dolphin watching, hiking, shopping in Santa Cruz or relaxed evenings by the sea, Tenerife offers a broad and practical choice for UK holidaymakers.
