About Santa Cruz De Tenerife holidays

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island’s capital and a good choice if you want a Tenerife holiday with more local life than a purpose-built beach resort. Set on the north-east coast, it is a working port city with wide avenues, leafy parks, museums, shops and a strong Canarian character. The atmosphere is lively during the day but generally more relaxed than the big southern resorts, making it well suited to travellers who enjoy cafés, culture and easy day trips.

The city centre is easy to explore on foot. Plaza de España is a useful starting point, close to the waterfront and main shopping streets, while the Auditorio de Tenerife is one of the island’s most recognisable modern landmarks. For a slower pace, Parque García Sanabria offers shaded paths, sculptures and places to sit with a coffee. The Mercado Nuestra Señora de África is also worth visiting for fresh produce, local specialities and a glimpse of everyday city life.

Santa Cruz is not a classic beach resort, but it does have access to one of Tenerife’s best-known beaches. Playa de Las Teresitas, a short journey north of the centre, is a sheltered sandy beach backed by mountains and palm trees. It is popular with locals as well as visitors, especially at weekends. Within the city itself, the focus is more on the harbour, promenades, shops and restaurants than on beachfront hotels.

Food is one of the highlights of staying here. You will find traditional Canarian restaurants serving dishes such as papas arrugadas, grilled fish, stews and local cheeses, alongside tapas bars, bakeries and modern Spanish dining. Evenings tend to be sociable rather than club-focused, with bars, terrace cafés and restaurants around the centre and waterfront.

Santa Cruz is also a practical base for exploring northern Tenerife. The tram links the city with La Laguna, a UNESCO-listed historic town, while the dramatic landscapes of Anaga Rural Park are within reach for walking, viewpoints and scenic drives. If you want a city-style Tenerife break with culture, food, shopping and easy access to nature, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a rewarding alternative to the island’s larger holiday resorts.

Santa Cruz De Tenerife Holidays FAQs

Santa Cruz is more of a city break destination than a traditional beach resort. However, Playa de Las Teresitas is close by and is one of the area’s main sandy beaches, making it easy to combine city sightseeing with beach time.
