About Santa Maria holidays

Santa Maria is Sal’s main holiday resort, set on the island’s sunny south coast and known for its long sweep of pale sand, turquoise water and relaxed Cape Verdean atmosphere. It is the best-known base in Cape Verde for a beach holiday, but it still feels fairly easy-going, with a low-rise centre, colourful streets, local cafés and a working pier where fishermen bring in the day’s catch.

The beach is the main focus for many visitors. Santa Maria Beach stretches for several kilometres, with room for sunbathing, swimming and beach walks. The sea can be calm in places, though Atlantic winds and currents mean it is always sensible to follow local advice. Watersports are a big part of the resort’s appeal, especially windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddleboarding and diving. Nearby Kite Beach is particularly well known among kitesurfers, while boat trips and snorkelling excursions are easy to arrange locally.

Santa Maria’s centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot. Around the pier and pedestrian streets you will find souvenir shops, small bars and restaurants serving grilled fish, tuna, lobster when available, and Cape Verdean dishes such as cachupa. There are also plenty of familiar international options, so it is easy to mix local meals with simple holiday favourites.

Evenings in Santa Maria are sociable rather than hectic. Many bars offer cocktails, sea views or live music, often with Cape Verdean rhythms such as morna and funaná. There are a few livelier late-night spots, but the overall feel is relaxed and informal rather than a large clubbing scene.

Santa Maria also works well as a base for seeing more of Sal. Popular day trips include the Pedra de Lume salt crater, the Buracona lagoon and “Blue Eye” when conditions are right, and Shark Bay, where lemon sharks can sometimes be seen in shallow water with a guide. With warm weather for much of the year, a simple layout and a good choice of hotels, Santa Maria suits holidaymakers who want beach time, watersports, casual dining and a gentle introduction to Cape Verde.
