About Pula holidays

Pula holidays combine Croatia’s Adriatic coastline with some of the country’s most impressive ancient history. Set near the southern tip of Istria, the Pula region is a good choice if you want clear seas, relaxed seaside resorts and plenty to explore beyond the hotel pool.

The city of Pula is the main hub, best known for its remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, which still hosts events in a dramatic setting close to the waterfront. Around the old town you’ll find Roman gates, cobbled streets, cafés, markets and restaurants serving Istrian specialities such as truffles, seafood, olive oil and local wines. It feels lively without being overwhelming, making it easy to mix sightseeing with slow lunches and evening strolls.

Along the coast, the beaches are typically pebble, shingle or rocky platforms rather than long sandy bays, so sea shoes can be useful. The reward is beautifully clear water, sheltered coves and attractive pine-backed swimming spots. Verudela and Stoja are popular coastal areas close to Pula, with bathing platforms, small bays and easy access to the sea. Further south, Medulin offers a more traditional resort feel, with a waterfront promenade, boat trips and a family-friendly atmosphere. Nearby Premantura is the gateway to Cape Kamenjak, a rugged protected peninsula known for rocky coves, turquoise water, walking and cycling trails.

The Pula region also works well as a base for day trips. Fažana, a pretty fishing town north of Pula, is the departure point for boats to Brijuni National Park, a small island group with Roman remains, woodland and coastal scenery. Inland Istria is within reach too, with hilltop towns, vineyards and countryside that show a different side of the peninsula.

For UK holidaymakers, Pula suits a varied break: part beach holiday, part cultural escape and part food-focused Istrian getaway. It is especially appealing if you prefer characterful resorts, scenic swimming spots and easy excursions over large-scale resort development.
