Hvar Island Holidays

Hvar Island is one of Croatia’s best-known Dalmatian islands, sitting off the coast near Split and reached mainly by ferry or catamaran. It has a sunny, polished feel without losing its historic character, with honey-coloured stone towns, clear Adriatic water, pine-fringed coves and hillsides scented with lavender and herbs.

Most visitors base themselves in Hvar Town, the island’s liveliest and most atmospheric resort. Above the town, the Spanish Fortress is worth the uphill walk for wide views over the rooftops and the Pakleni Islands just offshore. Beaches on Hvar are typically pebbly or rocky rather than sandy, with wonderfully clear water. Around Hvar Town you’ll find bathing platforms, coves and beach clubs, while quieter spots can be reached by boat, car or local bus. Elsewhere on the island, Stari Grad offers a gentler pace, pretty lanes and a historic harbour, while Jelsa and Vrboska are appealing for relaxed waterfront meals and a more low-key base.

Food is a big part of a holiday here. Menus often feature grilled fish, octopus, black risotto, local olive oil, Dalmatian ham and wines from the island’s vineyards. Dining tends to be at its best along the waterfront or tucked into old stone streets, especially if you enjoy long, unhurried evenings.

Hvar is also known for nightlife, particularly in Hvar Town, where summer evenings can run from sunset drinks to late bars and club-style venues. It is lively in peak season, but the island is not only for party holidays; walking, boat trips, wine tasting, swimming and exploring historic villages all add plenty of variety.
