Makarska is one of the best-known resorts on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, set between the clear Adriatic Sea and the dramatic slopes of Biokovo Mountain. It has a lively but relaxed holiday feel, with a long seafront promenade, a working harbour, pine-shaded beaches and plenty of places to eat and drink within easy walking distance.

The main beach is a broad, pebbly stretch backed by trees, cafés and beach bars, making it a convenient spot for swimming, sunbathing and hiring pedalos or paddleboards in the warmer months. Like much of Croatia, the water is usually clear and calm, so beach shoes can be useful for the pebbles and rocky sections. Smaller coves and swimming spots can be found along the coast if you prefer somewhere quieter.

Makarska’s centre is compact and pleasant to explore. The harbour is lined with restaurants and terraces, while the old town has stone streets, small squares and historic buildings such as St Mark’s Church on Kačić Square. The resort is a good choice if you like evenings that start with a waterfront meal and continue with a stroll along the promenade. In summer, there is a busier nightlife scene, with cocktail bars, music venues and late-night spots, though it is still more easy-going than a large party resort.

Food in Makarska is typically Dalmatian, with seafood, grilled fish, risotto, pasta, local olive oil and simple meat dishes widely available. You’ll find everything from casual pizzerias and bakeries to smarter harbourfront restaurants.

One of Makarska’s biggest advantages is its setting. Biokovo Nature Park rises directly behind the town and is popular for scenic drives, walking, viewpoints and the impressive Biokovo Skywalk. The mountain scenery gives the resort a striking backdrop and offers a complete contrast to the beach. Makarska is also well placed for exploring the Makarska Riviera, with nearby coastal villages, boat trips and ferry links towards Brač. Split, Omiš and other Dalmatian highlights can also be visited on day trips, making Makarska a practical base for a varied Croatian holiday.
