Food is hearty and flavourful rather than overly complicated. Typical dishes include rice and beans, stewed meats, plantain-based dishes such as mangú, fresh fish and tropical fruit. Merengue and bachata are central to Dominican culture, and you are likely to hear both in resorts, towns and local gatherings.
