Punta Cana is the Dominican Republic’s best-known holiday region, stretching along the country’s eastern coast where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic. It is particularly popular with UK travellers looking for easy-going resort holidays, long sandy beaches and a warm tropical climate. Much of the area is made up of purpose-built beachfront resorts, with the biggest choice around Bávaro, while quieter-feeling areas such as Uvero Alto, Cabeza de Toro and Cap Cana offer a slightly different pace.
The coastline is a major reason people choose Punta Cana. Bávaro Beach is one of the region’s most familiar stretches, known for pale sand, palms and calm-looking turquoise water in many areas. Playa Macao, further north, has a more open, natural feel and is often visited for surfing and beach walks. Many hotels sit directly on the sand, so days here tend to be relaxed and beach-focused, with swimming, sunbathing, water sports and boat trips all easy to arrange.
Beyond the beach, Punta Cana has a good range of things to do without needing to travel too far. Visitors can explore the lagoons and walking trails of Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve near Cap Cana, take a catamaran or snorkelling trip, or join excursions to nearby islands and countryside locations. Golf is also a strong draw, with several well-regarded courses in the wider region, many designed around sea views and tropical landscaping.
Food and drink are often centred around all-inclusive resorts, but there are also restaurants in areas such as Bávaro, Cap Cana and Punta Cana Village. Menus usually include a mix of Dominican dishes, seafood, international favourites and casual beachside dining. Local specialities worth trying include mangú, rice and beans, fried plantain and fresh fish where available.
Punta Cana is best suited to travellers who want a comfortable, resort-based holiday with beautiful beaches and organised activities close at hand. It is less about historic sightseeing than places such as Santo Domingo, but for sunshine, coastal scenery and a straightforward Caribbean escape, it remains one of the Dominican Republic’s most convenient and popular regions.
