Egypt is one of the world’s great holiday destinations, combining ancient history, desert landscapes, Red Sea resorts and the life of the River Nile. For many UK holidaymakers, it offers a choice between relaxing by the sea, exploring archaeological sites, or combining both in one trip.

The Red Sea is Egypt’s main beach holiday area, with resorts such as Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Marsa Alam and El Gouna offering warm weather, hotel-based stays and access to coral reefs. Snorkelling and diving are a major draw, particularly around the Sinai Peninsula and southern Red Sea, where clear water and colourful marine life are part of the appeal. Many resorts are well set up for all-inclusive holidays, with larger hotels, pools and organised excursions.

For history and culture, Egypt is exceptional. Cairo is the gateway to the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and major museum collections, while Luxor is often described as an open-air museum thanks to the temples of Karnak and Luxor, the Valley of the Kings and the tombs on the west bank of the Nile. Nile cruises between Luxor and Aswan are a popular way to see temples, river scenery and traditional villages at a slower pace.

Egypt’s landscapes are varied, from the fertile Nile Valley to the Sahara and Eastern Desert, with oases, mountains and vast open skies. Aswan has a more relaxed feel, with Nubian culture, river islands and warm southern light, while Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast has a different character shaped by its seafront, libraries and Greco-Roman history.

Food is another enjoyable part of a holiday in Egypt. Expect dishes such as koshari, grilled meats, falafel, ful medames, flatbreads and sweet pastries, with tea and fresh juices widely available. In resort hotels, international food is common, but it is worth trying local specialities where possible.

Egypt suits a wide range of trips, from winter sun and Red Sea beach breaks to cultural tours, Nile cruises and once-in-a-lifetime sightseeing holidays. Travel styles vary across the country, so it is worth choosing your area carefully depending on whether you want relaxation, diving, ancient monuments or a mix of experiences.
