About Hurghada holidays

Hurghada is one of Egypt’s best-known Red Sea holiday regions, set between a long stretch of coast and the rugged Eastern Desert. It is a practical choice for UK holidaymakers who want reliable sunshine, warm sea temperatures and a wide choice of resort hotels, with Hurghada International Airport serving the area directly.

The coastline is the main draw. Many hotels have their own beach areas, often with jetties or protected lagoons, and the Red Sea is known for clear water, coral reefs and colourful marine life. Snorkelling and diving are widely available, with boat trips heading to reef sites and island areas such as the Giftun Islands. Conditions vary by beach, so reef shoes can be useful in places where coral or stones are close to shore.

Hurghada itself is a spread-out resort city rather than a single compact town. The Marina and Sekalla areas offer restaurants, cafés and shops, while El Dahar, the older district, has a more local feel with markets, mosques and everyday Egyptian street life. Food ranges from hotel buffets and international restaurants to seafood, grilled meats, mezze and traditional dishes such as koshari and ful medames.

The wider region includes several popular resort areas, each with its own character. El Gouna, to the north, is a planned lagoon resort with a marina, restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere. Sahl Hasheesh is known for spacious beachfront hotels and a quieter setting. Makadi Bay is popular for resort-based stays and snorkelling, while Soma Bay, further south, has a more secluded feel and is also known for watersports.

Beyond the beaches, Hurghada offers desert excursions by 4x4 or quad bike, usually taking travellers into the surrounding mountains and plains for sunset views and Bedouin-style camp experiences. Longer day trips to Luxor are possible for those who want to see ancient temples and tombs, although the journey is lengthy. For many visitors, Hurghada works best as an easy Red Sea escape: beach time, reef trips, relaxed dining and striking desert scenery all in one region.

Hurghada Holidays FAQs

Hurghada is sunny for much of the year. Spring and autumn are especially comfortable for beach days, snorkelling and excursions. Summer can be very hot, particularly away from the coast, while winter is usually mild and bright, though evenings can feel cooler.
