About Preveza holidays

Preveza is a scenic region on Greece’s north-west mainland, set between the Ionian Sea and the sheltered waters of the Amvrakikos Gulf. It suits holidaymakers who want a relaxed Greek break with beaches, traditional food, interesting day trips and a less hurried atmosphere than many larger island resorts.

The coastline is one of Preveza’s main draws. Around Kanali, Monolithi, Vrachos and Loutsa, you’ll find long sandy beaches with clear Ionian water, plenty of space and a mix of organised sections and quieter stretches. Ammoudia, near the mouth of the Acheron River, is a gentle coastal village with a sheltered beach and a laid-back feel. Further north, Parga is one of the region’s best-known holiday spots, with colourful hillside houses, a Venetian castle, waterfront restaurants and small bays nearby.

Preveza town is a good base if you like somewhere with local character as well as holiday facilities. Its old streets, harbourfront and marina are lined with cafés, ouzeries and tavernas, and evenings are pleasantly sociable rather than hectic. Seafood is a highlight across the region, particularly around the Amvrakikos Gulf, while menus also feature grilled meats, pies, local cheeses and seasonal Greek dishes.

There is plenty to explore away from the beach. The ancient city of Nicopolis, founded after the Battle of Actium, is one of the area’s most important historical sites. The Monument of Zalongo and the nearby mountain scenery add another layer of local history and landscape. Nature lovers can visit the Amvrakikos wetlands, known for birdlife and peaceful lagoon scenery, or head inland to the Acheron River for walking, swimming in cool freshwater pools and seasonal outdoor activities.

Preveza is also well placed for exploring nearby parts of north-west Greece, including Lefkada and the wider Epirus region. With its combination of Ionian beaches, historic sites, rivers, wetlands and welcoming coastal towns, Preveza offers a varied mainland Greek holiday without feeling overly developed.
