Parga is one of the most appealing holiday resorts on Greece’s north-west mainland, set on the Ionian coast in the Preveza region. Although it is on the mainland, it has a distinctly island-like feel, with colourful houses rising around a sheltered bay, fishing boats in the harbour and wooded hills behind the town. It is a good choice for UK holidaymakers who want a scenic Greek resort with beaches, tavernas and day trips, without choosing somewhere too large or heavily built-up.

The town’s main focal point is the waterfront, where cafés, restaurants and small shops line the promenade. Evenings are relaxed and sociable rather than club-focused, with most nightlife centred on drinks by the harbour, cocktail bars and late dinners overlooking the water. Food is a big part of the appeal, with traditional Greek tavernas serving seafood, grilled meats, meze and local dishes, alongside more familiar holiday options.

Parga is particularly well placed for beach days. Krioneri Beach sits close to the centre, making it easy for a quick swim, while Piso Krioneri is a smaller nearby cove. Valtos Beach, on the other side of the headland, is the resort’s best-known stretch of sand and shingle, reached on foot over the hill, by road or by water taxi in season. Lichnos Beach, a little further along the coast, is another popular option with clear water and a more spacious feel.

For views and a sense of the town’s history, the Venetian Castle above Parga is well worth the walk. The climb is part of the experience, with lanes, steps and glimpses across the bay leading up to panoramic views over the harbour, Valtos Beach and the small offshore islet of Panagia. Boat trips are a popular way to explore the coast, with excursions often heading to nearby coves, Paxos and Antipaxos, or along the wider Ionian shoreline.

Parga suits couples, friends and families who enjoy a pretty setting, walkable streets and a classic Greek holiday atmosphere. Bear in mind that the town is hilly in places, so accommodation location can make a difference if you prefer to avoid steep walks.
