About Lesbos holidays

Lesbos, also known as Lesvos, is one of the largest Greek Islands and a rewarding choice for holidaymakers who want more than a fly-and-flop break. Set in the north-eastern Aegean, close to the Turkish coast, it combines traditional harbour towns, long beaches, olive-covered hills and a slower pace that suits relaxed exploring.

The island’s resorts are varied rather than overdeveloped. Molyvos, or Mithymna, is one of the most atmospheric places to stay, with stone houses climbing up towards a hilltop castle and a pretty harbour lined with tavernas. Nearby Petra has a broad beach and a village feel, while Anaxos is a smaller, easy-going option for simple seaside holidays. On the south-west coast, Skala Eressos is popular for its wide sandy beach and laid-back waterfront restaurants. Vatera, one of the island’s longest beaches, is a good choice if you want space, while Plomari on the south coast is known for its ouzo heritage and traditional character.

Lesbos is especially appealing if you enjoy scenery and local food. Inland, you’ll find olive groves, pine forests, monasteries, mountain villages and quiet roads with big Aegean views. The west of the island has a more rugged, volcanic landscape, including the Petrified Forest near Sigri, part of the Lesvos UNESCO Global Geopark. Around the Gulf of Kalloni, wetlands attract birdwatchers, particularly during migration seasons.

Food is a real highlight. Expect grilled fish, sardines from Kalloni, local cheeses, olives, honey and meze served with the island’s famous ouzo. Restaurants are generally informal, with the best meals often found in harbourfront tavernas or village squares.

For days out, visitors can explore Mytilene, the island capital, with its castle, waterfront and museums; visit monasteries such as Limonos; take boat trips from coastal resorts; or simply hire a car to discover quieter beaches and villages. Lesbos suits couples, independent travellers and anyone looking for an authentic Greek island holiday with beaches, culture and countryside in equal measure.
