About Greek Islands holidays

The Greek Islands offer a huge variety of holidays, from relaxed beach breaks and scenic island-hopping trips to culture-rich stays with historic sites, harbour towns and traditional villages. Spread across the Aegean and Ionian seas, they are not one single style of destination, so choosing the right island or island group makes a real difference.

Crete is the largest island and works well for travellers who want a mix of beaches, countryside, ancient history and lively resorts. Rhodes combines long stretches of coast with a beautifully preserved medieval Old Town, while Kos is known for its easy-going resorts, cycling routes and historic remains. Corfu, in the Ionian Islands, has greener scenery, Venetian-influenced architecture and a good choice of coastal towns and villages. Zakynthos is popular for its bright blue water, sea caves and beaches, while Kefalonia offers mountain views, pretty harbours and a quieter feel in many areas.

The Cyclades include some of Greece’s most recognisable island scenery. Santorini is famous for its caldera views, whitewashed villages and sunsets, making it a favourite for couples and special trips. Mykonos has stylish beach clubs, boutique hotels and a lively social scene, while Naxos and Paros offer a more laid-back mix of beaches, villages and local food. Smaller islands can be ideal for slower holidays, though ferry links and seasonal services are worth checking when planning.

Food is a big part of the experience across the islands. Expect fresh seafood, grilled meats, Greek salads, local cheeses, olives, honey and regional specialities that vary from island to island. Even in popular resorts, you can often find simple tavernas serving traditional dishes close to the waterfront or village square.

Beaches are one of the main reasons UK holidaymakers visit the Greek Islands, with everything from organised sandy bays to pebbly coves and dramatic volcanic shores. Beyond the coast, there are walking trails, monasteries, ancient ruins, boat trips, wineries and scenic drives. Whether you want an all-inclusive summer escape, a romantic break, a family-friendly resort or a multi-island adventure, the Greek Islands offer plenty of choice with a distinctly Greek sense of place.
