Mykonos Town, also known as Chora, is the lively heart of Mykonos and one of the most characterful places to stay on the island. Its maze of whitewashed lanes, blue-trimmed balconies and small churches creates a classic Cycladic setting, while the harbourfront, boutique shops, cafés and bars keep the atmosphere busy from morning until late. It is a good choice for travellers who want to be close to restaurants, nightlife, sightseeing and transport links without needing a car every day.

The town is best explored on foot. The narrow streets were built for wandering, with little squares, souvenir shops, galleries and tucked-away tavernas appearing around almost every corner. One of the most photographed areas is Little Venice, where colourful old houses sit right on the water and sunset views draw visitors in the early evening. Nearby, the famous windmills overlook the sea and are an easy walk from the centre.

Mykonos Town is not a beach resort in the same way as some parts of the island, but there are small swimming spots nearby and it is a practical base for reaching the island’s better-known beaches. Buses and taxis connect the town with popular coastal areas, and boat trips are also available in season. The old port area is useful for ferries and excursions, including trips to the archaeological island of Delos.

Food is a big part of a stay here. You will find everything from simple gyros and casual cafés to seafood restaurants, traditional Greek tavernas and stylish dining spots. Evenings tend to be lively, especially in summer, with cocktail bars, waterfront venues and late-night clubs creating the nightlife Mykonos is known for. That said, it is still possible to enjoy quieter meals and relaxed strolls if you choose side streets away from the busiest bars.

Mykonos Town suits couples, groups of friends and first-time visitors who want a central, atmospheric base. It can feel crowded in peak season, particularly around sunset and cruise ship arrival times, but its convenience, charm and choice of places to eat and drink make it one of the island’s most appealing places to stay.
