Samos Holidays

Samos is one of the eastern Aegean islands, set close to the Turkish coast and known for its green hills, mountain villages, clear coves and relaxed harbour towns. It suits holidaymakers who want a Greek island with plenty of scenery and history, as well as time by the sea.

The north coast has some of the island’s best-known resorts. Kokkari is a favourite for its pretty waterfront, pebble beaches and tavernas beside the water, with a backdrop of wooded hills. It is also a popular spot for windsurfing when conditions are right. Further west, Karlovasi has a more local feel, with a harbour, university-town atmosphere and access to beaches and walking routes. On the south coast, Pythagorion is one of Samos’ most attractive bases, with a marina, cafés, restaurants and a historic centre linked to the island’s ancient past. Nearby Potokaki offers a longer beach and a convenient location close to the airport. Votsalakia, near the foot of Mount Kerkis, is a good choice for a quieter stay with mountain views and beaches nearby.

Samos has a varied coastline, from organised beaches with sunbeds and tavernas to smaller coves reached by road or path. Popular choices include Tsamadou, Lemonakia, Potokaki and Psili Ammos, each offering a different feel. Many beaches are pebbly or a mix of shingle and sand, so beach shoes can be useful.

Away from the coast, the island is surprisingly lush, with vineyards, olive groves, pine woods and steep mountain scenery. Samos is associated with sweet Muscat wine, and visitors can learn more at local wineries or wine museums. History is another strong reason to visit: the Heraion of Samos, a UNESCO-listed ancient sanctuary, and the remarkable Tunnel of Eupalinos near Pythagorion are among the standout sights.

Food is a big part of a Samos holiday. Expect traditional tavernas serving grilled fish, local meats, salads, cheeses, honey and island wine, especially around harbours and village squares. Days can be as active or as relaxed as you like, from boat trips and snorkelling to walking trails, village visits and scenic drives through the hills.
