Megali Ammos Holidays

Megali Ammos is a relaxed beach resort on the south coast of Skiathos, set just outside Skiathos Town. Its name means “big sand”, and the resort is centred on a long, sandy bay with clear water, sunbeds and a good choice of places to eat close to the shore. It is one of the most convenient places to stay on the island if you want a beach holiday without being far from the harbour, shops and evening life of the capital.

The beach is the main attraction. It is generally easy-going and informal, with tavernas and beach bars dotted along the seafront. In places the sand can be quite narrow, especially where sunbeds are set close to the water, but the bay has a pleasant, traditional feel and is ideal for lazy days with lunch nearby. The sea is usually inviting for swimming, though conditions can vary when the wind picks up.

Megali Ammos suits couples, friends and independent travellers who like everything close at hand. Accommodation ranges from simple studios to small hotels, many within walking distance of the beach. Some properties sit slightly uphill, which can mean better views but also a short climb back after a day by the sea.

Eating out is straightforward, with Greek tavernas, casual restaurants and beachfront spots serving seafood, grilled meats, salads and local dishes. Evenings in the resort are fairly low-key, more about a relaxed meal and a drink by the water than late-night partying. For livelier bars, cocktail lounges and a wider dining scene, Skiathos Town is close enough to walk to for many visitors, or a quick taxi ride away.

There is plenty to do nearby without needing a car. You can stroll into Skiathos Town to explore the old harbour, the Bourtzi peninsula and its narrow streets, or join boat trips from the port to beaches such as Lalaria, the old Kastro area or neighbouring islands when conditions allow. The island’s regular bus route also makes it easy to visit other south-coast beaches, including Koukounaries. Megali Ammos is a good choice if you want a simple, well-located Skiathos holiday with beach time, good food and easy access to the island capital.
