About Skiathos Town holidays

Skiathos Town is the lively main resort and harbour of Skiathos, set on the island’s south-east coast. It is a good choice if you want a Greek island holiday with easy access to restaurants, bars, boat trips and transport around the island, while still being close to beaches.

The town is built around a busy waterfront, with ferries, excursion boats and yachts giving it a relaxed but energetic feel. Behind the harbour, narrow streets climb between whitewashed houses, small shops, bakeries and cafés. It is a pleasant place to wander in the evening, especially around the old port and the Bourtzi peninsula, a small pine-covered headland between the old and new harbours with lovely views back towards the town.

Skiathos Town has plenty of places to eat, from simple tavernas serving Greek dishes to harbourfront restaurants and casual cafés. Evenings are sociable rather than overwhelming, with cocktail bars, music bars and late-night venues mainly around the waterfront and the lanes nearby. It suits couples, groups of friends and travellers who like having a choice of places to go after dinner.

For sightseeing, the Papadiamantis House Museum is one of the town’s best-known cultural stops, dedicated to the Skiathos-born writer Alexandros Papadiamantis. The Church of Agios Nikolaos, above the town, is also worth the climb for views over the harbour and rooftops. Boat trips are a major part of holidays here, with excursions often visiting beaches and nearby islands, depending on weather and sea conditions.

Although Skiathos Town is not mainly a beach resort, Megali Ammos beach is close enough for many visitors to walk to, with sand, shallow water and places to eat nearby. The island’s bus route also makes it straightforward to reach other beaches along the south coast, including Koukounaries. This makes the town a practical base if you want to explore without hiring a car.

Skiathos Town is best for holidaymakers who enjoy a harbour setting, atmospheric streets and a wide choice of dining and nightlife, with the option to spend days on the beach or out on the water.
