Hungary is a rewarding choice for a city break, cultural escape or longer holiday combining history, spa traditions and gentle countryside. Landlocked in central Europe, it is best known to many UK travellers for Budapest, but there is much more to explore beyond the capital.
Budapest is the natural starting point for many holidays. Split by the River Danube into historic Buda and lively Pest, the city offers grand architecture, riverside views, thermal baths, cafés, markets and museums. Highlights include Buda Castle, the Parliament Building, the Chain Bridge and the city’s famous bathhouses, where warm mineral waters are part of everyday Hungarian life.
Outside the capital, Lake Balaton is Hungary’s main summer holiday area. Often called the Hungarian Sea, it has lakeside beaches, sailing, family-friendly resorts and wine-growing hills. Towns such as Balatonfüred and Tihany are known for relaxed waterfronts, walking routes and attractive views, while the southern shore tends to be popular for easy-going summer stays.
For culture and scenery, the Danube Bend makes a good day trip or short break, with historic towns such as Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre set along a scenic stretch of the river. Eger is known for its castle, baroque centre and red wines, while Pécs in southern Hungary has museums, Ottoman-era architecture and a Mediterranean feel. The Great Hungarian Plain offers a different side of the country, with wide open landscapes, traditional horse culture and the protected grasslands of Hortobágy National Park.
Hungarian food is hearty and distinctive. Paprika features widely, especially in dishes such as goulash, chicken paprikash and rich stews, while sweet pastries, strudels and chimney cake are popular treats. Hungary also has established wine regions, including Tokaj, Eger and areas around Lake Balaton.
Hungary suits travellers who enjoy history, architecture, thermal spas, food and wine, and scenic touring without needing a beach resort in the traditional seaside sense. It is a practical option for short breaks to Budapest as well as slower holidays exploring towns, lakes and countryside.
